My Lesson on Questioning:

Summary: After watching the movie, The Great Gatsby, I wanted to have a discussion using some student generated questions. So I placed question starters on pieces of paper around the room and the let the students move around. At each station, the student/students had to create a question. Some examples were:
What was the meaning/purpose of........
the cufflinks Mr. Gatsby was holding when he got shot?
The eyes on the building?
Clarify why...
Daisy chose Tom over Gatsby.
Gatsby took the blame for Daisy.
What would have happened if.....
Daisy would have left Tom for Gatsby?
Daisy hadn't killed Mrytle?
What were some of the motives behind.....
Daisy hitting Mrytle?
Tom cheating on Daisy?
Who/What do you think was....
Nick's connection to Gatsby?
The point of Gatsby having such elaborate parties?

Plus many more.

After we had complete our questions, we came back together as a whole and discussed the questions. I gave each student one of the pieces of paper and they got to choose some of the questions to present to the class. As a teacher, I had a secondary role in the discussion as I let them discuss and analyze.

Overall Thoughts:
I thought the lesson went very well. I constructed the lesson to keep students accountable and participating. I would have liked more discussion, but I feel that part of the class will develop as the students get more comfortable with each other.
When you say you would have liked more discussion, what was it you expected the student discussion to be like and what was the actual discussion like?
I love the question starters...How did you come to choose these particular starters? (Maureen)
